Puttin the Fun in Friday!

Sparkle Paint!

I watched my two nephew's a few days ago and it was getting too hot for them outside so we came in and made sparkle paint. This is great because you always have the supplies on hand. Well almost always- I didn't have much salt. This paint is made from salt, flour and water, and when it dries it sparkles because of the salt. They had so much fun making it, and the best part is since it is just flour, salt and water if they make a mess it cleans up easy!

Gage and Henry creating their master pieces! I was joking and said lets be patriotic and we will make the paint red, white, and blue and make the flag. Gage apparently took me serious (I knew Henry wouldn't be able to make a flag) I was surprised by how well Gage did!
Here is what you need. 1 Cup Flour, 1 Cup Salt(+), and 1 Cup Water. (If you don't have enough of one of the ingredients then you can just do equal parts) And we can't forget the food coloring to make it interesting.

You dump the ingredients into a bowl ( I would suggest mixing the dry ingredients first to avoid clumping) and stir until smooth. If it seems too runny add salt instead of flour to thicken it up. Or if it is too thick depending on the opening you are using to squirt it add some water.

Then because I didn't have enough salt, I divided the paint we made into different bowls so that the kids could help put food coloring in. Normally each batch would be a different color.

Put the paint in some sort of squeeze bottle. You could use an old ketchup or mustard bottle, or I just got these picnic ones at the dollar store.

As you can see though, the top came off during use - these are a few years old though and this was the first time it has happened. Use paper plates for their canvass (I prefer the cheap paper-paper plates, not the ones I used- it seems to absorb and dry better)

Then let the master piece dry! (it takes while, like sometimes a few days depending on how zealous your child is) It is better to let them dry inside somewhere, the sun makes the colors fade. Also I have found that the pastel colors look way cooler, I wasn't really a fan of the way that these looked. Do lots of colors and it makes them so bright and fun! Also you can use the paints for a few days if you just cover them with saran wrap.
